Self Portraits #1 - #6
Chemigrams reveal the invisible and destructive properties of chemistry acting on the physical nature of the material. Using the process as an analogy for my body, I aim to express the invisible and destructive nature of an autoimmune disease. Exposing the photo paper with transparencies of x-rays of my spine and pelvis, areas affected by my arthritis, the chemigram development mirrors my experience in living with disease.

Picture

By superimposing the text "An Army of the Sick Can't Be Defeated" over images from medical advertisements and of my spastic hand, I create a new type of medical advertisement to recruit and advocate for an army of the sick. Since disease and chronic illness are stigmatized, the sick body becomes weaponized - leaving few options for the sick either to succumb to the external systemic oppressions against or to reclaim our bodies and fight back together. Additionally, as I try to engage the cyanotype process as a form of accessible photography [inexpensive and reproducible and camera-less] one goal of this cyanotype series would be to help demarcate accessible spaces.
